Review of Blossom and Root's The Graveyard Book Study (Level 6)

A review of The graveyard book study by blossom and root

I have to admit, I approached The Graveyard Book with a bit of hesitation. The story begins with a murder—a daunting premise for a children’s book—but I quickly reminded myself that Harry Potter started the same way, and it turned out to be one of the most loved books we’ve ever read as a family. Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book is no different: exceptional in every way.

Here are five things we loved about this book study:

  1. Inspiring Creative Writing Through Neil Gaiman’s Storytelling

Gaiman’s intricate, captivating writing style inspired my kids to dig deeper into their own creative writing. The study provided thoughtful prompts that helped them analyze his techniques—like his vivid descriptions and unique characterizations—and then incorporate similar elements into their work. It was incredible to see their writing evolve throughout the study.

  2. Grammar, Copywork, and Vocabulary Integration Blossom and Root excel at weaving in language arts elements like grammar, copywork, and vocabulary in a way that feels natural and connected to the novel. Unlike many book studies that feel like a chore, this one struck a perfect balance between providing a high-quality education and keeping the magic of the story intact. The book itself remained the hero of the study, and that’s a rare and wonderful thing.

  3. Memorable Social Studies Prompts The social studies component of this study was a standout. One of our favorite activities was visiting a local cemetery to learn about gravestone symbols and history. This sparked a week-long rabbit trail as we researched the name of an old gravestone we discovered, adding depth and real-world connection to the study.

The mix of literary analysis, creative projects, and historical exploration provided a multi-dimensional learning experience that kept both my kids engaged.

  2. Family-Friendly Discussion Topics Despite the book’s darker themes, the study handled them in a sensitive and thoughtful way. The discussion prompts encouraged meaningful conversations about life, death, and morality, which added a surprising layer of depth to our homeschool journey.

Blossom and Root’s The Graveyard Book study masterfully balances education and wonder, providing a memorable experience that inspires creativity, curiosity, and thoughtful exploration. I highly recommend it to any family looking to turn an exceptional novel into an unforgettable learning adventure.
